This is an exciting introduction to professional makeup and hair artistry within the industry.

Based in our commercial salon, you will develop a range of practical skills such as hair plaiting, styling and using temporary hair colour and makeup application, whilst developing your nail art techniques and exploring the art of photographic makeup.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following:

  • Introduction to the hair and beauty industry
  • Presenting a professional image in a salon
  • Hair plaiting
  • Themed face painting
  • Shampoo and conditioning
  • Styling women’s hair
  • Basic makeup application
  • Nail art application
  • Creating a hair and beauty image
  • Colouring hair using temporary colour
  • Following health and safety in the salon
  • The art of photographic makeup

Enrichment and work-related activities will also form part of this qualification.

How is it assessed?

This course is assessed by practical observations, a portfolio of evidence and two exams.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You do not need any formal qualifications, just passion and a commitment to your studies.

However, the ability to demonstrate great attendance, punctuality and an excellent work ethic will support you in your application.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below grade 4 in your English and/or maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your chosen course when you join us.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2022), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Upon successful completion of this course, you will be able to progress on to one of the following:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Makeup Studies
  • Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy Studies
  • Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing Studies
  • Level 2 Certificate in Barbering

Alternatively, you may want to gain employment as a Beauty Receptionist, Makeup Consultant, Sales Representative or become self-employed.

Additional Information

As part of this programme, you are required to wear a uniform. There is also a kit required to complete your assessments which can be purchased from a recommended supplier. You may be eligible for financial support to cover these costs.
