Jake’s Leap of Faith Pays Off

Jake Jackson, 24, from Huyton has always had an interest in hairdressing but was nervous about entering a female dominated profession after leaving school.

He chose to study Public Services, shying away from his dream of becoming a hairdresser. After completing college, Jake was still not fully satisfied that he was on the right career path.

Following a couple of years away from education, Jake returned to Knowsley Community College and attended an open evening. Whilst there he enquired about joining the level 2 diploma in hairdressing. The course covers all aspects of cutting, colouring, styling techniques and product knowledge through ongoing assessment.

After taking a leap of faith joining the course, he noticed a big change in himself and said it has given him “a real focus and determination in something I’m genuinely passionate about.”

Speaking about his experience since joining the college, he says, “The tutors have been so supportive and made me feel right at home. Being in a class of people my age has also been reassuring too.”

With a busy schedule as a freelance mobile hairdresser as well as attending College, Jake has to manage his time well. Jake uses the techniques he picks up in college and puts them to practice on his clients which gives him valuable experience and practice in this competitive industry.

Now in his second year of study, having progressed onto the level 3 hairdressing course, Jake plans to travel around the country attending hair shows and showing of his skills once he has fully qualified.

Jake has recently competed in his first hair competition and managed to come second, he said “I was so proud of myself seeing what I could achieve gave me the confidence boost I needed”. After Jake has travelled around the country, he plans to settle down as a stylist at a local salon.

Jake has loved his time at Knowsley Community College and is so glad to have joined. He says “There is no doubt in my minds that this was the right choice for me. It’s definitely the best decision I’ve ever made.”
