Funding changes set to help access to adult education

People wishing to return to education in Knowsley and across the country may be eligible for new adult education funding through a government scheme.

Under the new scheme, which is available for courses starting from September 2018 under a one year trial, means that anyone earning less than £15,736.50, can now access adult education for free.

The changes should help to increase adult education participation. It will also support those that are in low paid employment who wish to progress in their career with the assistance of a qualification.

Gill Banks, Principal of Knowsley Community College commented: “We welcome these changes to adult education funding. Affordable adult education is hugely important in trying to help widen participation and improve outcomes in our communities. Knowsley Community College have an extensive range of courses starting from September, so I would encourage anyone considering returning to study to seize this opportunity.”

Just some of the courses which are eligible for the full funding include accounting, hair and beauty, floristry, catering and health and social care amongst many more.

Knowsley Community College will be hosting a series of enrolment and information events throughout the summer for adults who are considering embarking on further study from September onwards.

The change in funding complements Advanced Learner Loans. These loans are available to those aged 19 and above studying for eligible qualifications at levels 3, 4, 5 and 6. Getting a loan doesn’t depend on household income and there’s no credit check. Repayments aren’t required until you’re earning over £25,000 a year. Once you earn over this amount you pay back 9% of the earnings you receive above this figure. The loan is written off entirely after 30 years.
