Colleges prepare for Visitor Economy Week
February 1, 2019
Students and staff across Knowsley Community College and St Helens College are busy preparing for Visitor Economy Week in February.
The exciting initiative, which will run from 4th – 8th February, brings together key Liverpool City Region partners to demonstrate to school children, students, teachers, parents and employers the variety of careers and opportunities in our thriving tourism industry.
Combining over 50 different events and activities, the week aims to encourage students to explore the career opportunities within the visitor economy and provide a taste of working in hospitality, retail, tourism and travel.
The week of activities will launch at Liverpool Football Club with an opening breakfast, followed by a regional skills show at Anfield, giving attendees the chance to meet local employers, colleges, universities and apprenticeship providers all under one roof.
Knowsley Community College and St Helens College will also be hosting its own employer focused skills show including have-a-go activities that showcase exciting careers in the industry to students across the College.
Visitor Economy Week celebrations will conclude with a closing ceremony dinner at the Richmond Hotel, in Liverpool, where catering and hospitality students from the College group and various college’s across the city region, will come together to provide an exclusive fine dining experience to key contacts in the industry.
Curriculum Manager at St Helens College, Jen McGill, said: “VE Week is the perfect opportunity for us to showcase some of our successful alumni, who have gone on to establish careers with some amazing employers including Michelin-starred restaurants, top hotel chains and global companies.
She added: “This week provides a first-hand insight into how successful a career in the visitor economy can be and how it creates some amazing opportunities to work around the world.”
Jette Burford, CEO of SK College Group, said: “We are very pleased to be taking part in Visitor Economy Week. The events we have planned are sure to be great fun and very informative to students that may be considering their career options. We have a long standing catering, tourism and hospitality department which has equipped generations of students with the skills to go on and achieve great success in their professional careers.”
This initiative is the first in a series of events that will be staged over the next 12 months to help promote the visitor economy as a credible career choice, and raise the profile of the sector.
