“I thought to myself – it’s now or never!”
Mum of four, Jane, found herself lacking motivation and passion for her career in IT, and knew she had to make a career change.
It was receiving an Adult Course Guide through the post, which sparked Jane’s ambition to retrain and pursue her fascination for genetics and biology. Jane explains, “I’ve always had an interest in science but never had the opportunity to do it and regretted my decision to not pursue university, so when I spotted the Access to HE: Health Sciences course in the Adult Course Guide, I thought to myself – it’s now or never!”
Alongside her busy family life, freelance dog grooming business and pursuing part-time employment as bank staff with the NHS, Jane has learnt the art of juggling her family and work commitments around her studies, spending three days per week in College.
Jane says, “It can be intense at times – especially when you think that the course is equivalent to three A levels and is completed within a year – but the staff go above and beyond to support you and are very approachable. I don’t feel that I am under pressure because they are so accessible.”
She adds, “It’s also reassuring to know that I am studying alongside like-minded people, from varied ages and backgrounds – we are all in the same boat. We are quite a social group too and very supportive of each other, so it’s great to be able to have that support network that we can all tap into.”
Now near completion of her course, the aspiring Biomedical Scientist, has secured her place at Liverpool John Moores, to study BA (Hons) Biomedical Science in September.
Jane says, “Choosing a different career path and getting back into education is the best decision that I’ve ever made and what I’ve realised is it’s never too late to do this!”
