Working in our commercial salon, you will be developing all the skills you need to launch a successful career as a Hairdresser.
You will practise your skills on commercial clients including cutting, colouring and styling and will also learn how to conduct client consultations and master the art of shampooing and conditioning the hair and scalp.
This course will prepare you for employment and the expectations of the daily running of a salon environment.
When will I start the course and how long will it take?
The course will start in September and will take one academic year to complete.
This course will take place at our Main Campus, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 3SD.
What will I study?
The content of this course will focus on the following modules:
- The art of dressing hair
- Client consultation for hair services
- Health and safety practice in the salon
- Cutting women’s hair
- Colouring and lightening hair
- Shampooing and conditioning the hair and scalp
- The art of colouring hair
- Working in the hair industry
During the course you are also required to undertake work experience to prepare you for employment, increase your chance of job offers and use your experience as a reference.
How is it assessed?
You will be assessed throughout the course and are required to complete your assessments on a commercial client (paying customer). At the start of your course, you will practice the skills on friends and family members, following this, you will be required to bring clients in for your assessments.
You will produce a journal which will showcase the practical skills you have developed over the academic year with photographic evidence which will be submitted for verification.
Attendance is compulsory on this course as all of the units are carried out within the first term. Attending all units will help you to achieve in your exams.
Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?
You should have 3 GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English and/or maths.
Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below a grade 4 in your English and/or maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your chosen course when you join us.
What are the course fees?
If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2025), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?
Once you have successfully completed this course, you are eligible to become a graduate State Registered Hairdresser (SRH) with The Hairdressing Council.
There’s a wide range of career opportunities as a junior hairdresser/stylist within:
- Commercial hair salons
- Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
- Product manufacturing and training
- Television, film, theatre and media
- Cruise liners
- Armed services
- HM Prison Service
Students will also have the opportunity to develop their skills further by undertaking more advanced qualifications at level 3, including:
- Level 3 Hairdressing
Additional Information
As part of this programme, you are required to wear a uniform (tunic), which will be worn with black trousers or a skirt and a full black shoe. Our recommended uniform supplier is Florence Roby. There is also a kit required to complete your assessments which can be purchased from our recommended supplier, Dennis Williams. More information will be provided during the application process and you may be eligible for a bursary to cover these costs.
