This course is suitable for students aged 19 and over.

English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) can help you if English is not your first language and you are living or planning to settle in the UK.

The course is offered at different levels to improve your English Language skills.

During the course, you will develop your speaking and listening, reading and writing, grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation for communication in everyday life, education and work.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

We have various start dates throughout the year and the course takes up to one year complete.

This course will take place at our Main Campus, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 3SD.

What will I study?

Functional English provides the basis for effective communication and understanding across the three subject skill areas; speaking and listening, reading and writing. The study of English can broaden your skills and confidence, allowing you to develop skills ESOL courses are designed to help you improve your level of English, to get more out of your life in the UK and to make it easier to:

  • talk to doctors, teachers, bank or shop assistants
  • fill in administrative forms
  • understand laws and customs
  • help your children with homework
  • study or train for a qualification
  • look for employment or apply for citizenship

How is it assessed?

Courses follow the national ESOL Skills for Life curriculum and you will be taught all four skills of language: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing. You will sit an examination for each of these skills.

You will be required to do homework and to study outside of class time, as this is an important part of the learning.

You will have access to the College’s library to use the computers for college work, to study in the library or to borrow books or magazines.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

Before you start an ESOL programme with us you will have an interview and assessment to ensure that you are placed at the correct level to help you progress and achieve.

What are the course fees?

ESOL courses are free for EU citizens or those with a right to remain. An eligibility assessment will be carried out once we receive your details.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Improving your English can help you get more out of your life here in the UK. It will also help if you want to improve your CV, or apply to become a British citizen.
