Full-time mum Stephanie decided to return to education once her children were in school. She has since progressed to University as she pursues an exciting career as a media makeup artist for theatre, TV and film.
After leaving secondary school, Stephanie started a hairdressing course at college. Shortly after starting her course, she fell pregnant. Stephanie returned to college but fell pregnant again with her second child. Balancing a full-time role as a mum, returning to college was out of the question for Stephanie until all three of her children had started full-time school.
It was at this point that Stephanie, from Kirkby, attended an Open Event at Knowsley Community College to see what courses were available. She was immediately inspired by the makeup demonstrations on display. After speaking with tutors Stephanie, 35, decided to enrol onto the level 3 theatrical, special effects and hair and media makeup course. The highly specialised qualification is ideal for those seeking a career as a theatrical media makeup artist.
Stephanie says, “At an Open Evening, I saw a media makeup demonstration and knew this would be the perfect course for me. College was full of fantastic opportunities which look great on your CV. I did the makeup for the Chambers of Horrors in St George’s Hall and the West End. I won several industry competitions and undertook some freelance work for films. The tutors are extremely supportive and I’m grateful for their help.”
Encouraging others Stephanie says “I enjoyed being a mature student. The opportunities this course has given me has been amazing! Due to my previous qualifications from school, coupled with my life experience, I was eligible to start at level 3. I experienced a period of illness during the course but with the help and support of the college who put a care plan together for me and supported me through my assignments, it turned out to be one of the best years of my life as I not only carved out a new career, but I made friends for life. The tutors are lovely and so were my fellow students.”
After successfully completing her course, Stephanie has since secured a place at university to study a Foundation degree in Creative Makeup Design and Practice. Stephanie adds, “I would recommend returning to college later on as it’s never too late to learn. I now have an exciting career ahead of me as a media makeup artist for theatre, TV and film!”
