You will be assessed by examinations at the end of year 13. “ Mathematics is a part of everyday life. You use mathematics when visiting the bank, buying a car or even following a cooking recipe. You use principles of mathematics in everything you do, so why not learn about the thing you use every single day? ” What will I study? How is it assessed? What can I go on to do once I have completed this? You will gain the background knowledge required for many academic degree courses, including mathematics, science, engineering, economics, finance and computing. Mathematical skills such as logical thinking, problem-solving and decision making are recognised as invaluable and can be applied to a wide range of careers from medicine and engineering to business and banking. You should have five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including a grade 4 in English and a grade 5 in maths. Entry Requirements You will extend your knowledge of algebra, trigonometry, geometry and statistics and will learn how mathematics is used to model real-life situations. This will enable you to understand, construct and make predictions about systems as diverse as: • Genetic inheritance • Pin codes • Group behaviour • Putting hardware into space • Impact of ice on electrical cables • Building to withstand earthquakes You will also learn how to analyse and interpret data as well as develop valuable problem-solving skills, which are highly valued by universities and employers. 63 A LEVEL MATHEMATICS
