During this A level, you will cover the following: • Language, the individual and society You will consider various techniques writers use and evaluate their effectiveness and how they create meanings. You will also study how children acquire language, the various stages of development, and make links between social interaction and language acquisition. • Language varieties, diversity and change You will explore a variety of English, including attitudes to language diversity and language in social and geographical contexts. This will include looking at accent and dialect as well as how factors such as age, gender and occupation can affect language use. You will also explore language in different contexts from 1600 to the present day. • Language in action You will explore and analyse language data and carry out two pieces of individual research - a language investigation and a piece of original writing with a commentary. You will be assessed by a combination of examinations and non-examined assessments including both an investigation and a piece of original writing. “ The English language is the most universal language in history. Through the study of this, you can decipher the origin and meaning, tracing it back to its very roots. ” What will I study? How is it assessed? What can I go on to do once I have completed this? An A level in English Language shows that you have excellent reading and writing skills, the ability to communicate effectively and an understanding of one of the most common languages in the world. You could progress on to university before securing a career in the media, journalism, publishing, business, speech therapy or teaching.
