This course will give you a great introduction to the industry. You develop the skills and knowledge required to progress on to the next level of study and will also have the opportunity to complete work experience within a salon setting.

You will explore everything from the art of dressing and styling hair and creating an image, to colouring hair effectively and maintaining a professional image in the salon.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

The course will start in September and will take one year to complete.

This course will take place at our Main Campus, Huyton, Liverpool, L36 3SD.

What will I study?

During this course, you will cover the following units:

  • Introduction to the hair and beauty sector
  • Presenting a professional image in a salon
  • The art of dressing hair
  • Health and safety in the salon
  • Working with others in the hair and beauty sector
  • Create a hair and beauty image
  • Colouring hair using temporary colour
  • Salon reception duties
  • Creating and maintaining retail displays in the salon
  • Shampoo and conditioning
  • Styling women’s hair
  • Styling men’s hair
  • Hair plaiting

Work experience within a commercial salon and tutorials will also form part of this course.

How is it assessed?

You will be continuously assessed over the period of the course and are required to complete your assessments on a commercial client (paying customer).
At the start of your course, you will practice the skills on friends and family members, following this, you will be required to bring clients in for your assessments. Throughout this course, you will build a portfolio of evidence which will be submitted for verification.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You do not need any formal qualifications, just passion and a commitment to your studies.

Achieving a good standard of English and maths is a key requirement for many jobs, as well as for courses you may wish to progress on to. If you achieve below grade 4 in your English and/or maths GCSEs at school, you will study it alongside your chosen course when you join us.

What are the course fees?

If you are a school leaver, aged 16-18, (under the age of 19 on or before 31st August 2024), you do not pay tuition fees or examination and registration fees and may be eligible for additional support depending on your financial situation. What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

Once you have successfully completed this course, you will have the opportunity to enhance your skills, experience and knowledge by progressing on to one of the following courses:

  • Level 2 Diploma in Hairdressing Studies
  • Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Makeup Studies
  • Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy Studies

Alternatively, you may wish to secure employment, or an apprenticeship in the industry.

Additional Information

As part of this programme, you are required to wear a uniform (tunic), which will be worn with black trousers or a skirt and a full black shoe. Our recommended uniform supplier is Florence Roby. There is also a kit required to complete your assessments which can be purchased from our recommended supplier, Dennis Williams. More information will be provided during the application process and you may be eligible for a bursary to cover these costs.
