Level 3 Certificate in Barbering

This course has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills to an advanced level through a variety of techniques including creatively cutting men’s hair and the intricate specialist work of cutting facial hair.

Underpinning this qualification, you will develop a sound knowledge of monitoring health and safety whilst working in the barbering industry. You will also develop a knowledge and understanding of the practical skills learned throughout this qualification.

The purpose of this qualification is to develop your practical skills to a high level of occupational ability to enable you to perform your own salon services.

When will I start the course and how long will it take?

This part-time course will start in September and take one year to complete. You will attend College 5.30pm – 8.30pm.

This course is delivered at our Main Campus, Stockbridge Lane, Huyton, L36 3SD.

Alongside this course, a work placement within a barber shop will be advisable as this will help to build on knowledge and skills to support the full completion of this course.

What will I study?

You will be taught by industry professionals and you will be based in the College’s fully equipped, commercial salon. You will learn the theory behind the practices you explore and you will be provided with the confidence needed to launch your career in barbering.

You will learn the following units:

  • Working in the hair industry
  • Maintaining health and safety in the salon
  • Client consultation for hair services
  • How to shampoo and condition the hair and scalp

You will have a choice of the following units:

  • Promoting products and services to clients in a salon
  • Colouring and lightening hair
  • Providing perming services
  • Cutting men’s hair
  • Cutting facial hair
  • Creating an image on a theme within the hair sector
  • The art of colouring
  • Scalp massage
  • Salon reception duties
  • Styling men’s hair

How is it assessed?

All work is continually assessed and you will undertake practical assessments, observations, portfolio of evidence, written tasks and online testing.

Do I need any previous qualifications to start this course?

You should hold the level 2 diploma in barbering or a level 2 certificate in barbering along with a good standard of English and maths.

What are the course fees?

The total cost of this course is £941.

There are a number of flexible payment options available including an interest-free payment plan with a monthly direct debit payment.

What can I go on to do once I have completed this course?

As a senior barber, students could progress directly into employment in a variety of contexts, which include:

  • Commercial salons
  • Specialist African hair salons
  • Independent/self-employed/mobile/home-based settings
  • Television, film, theatre and media
  • Armed services
  • HM prison service
  • Cruise liners
  • Hospitals/care homes

Whilst the primary purpose of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment, learners may choose to develop their knowledge and skills further by completing a specialist qualification at level 4 in one or more of the following areas:

  • Salon management
  • Hair colour correction
  • Specialist hair and scalp services
  • Advanced hair styling
