PERFORMING ARTS STUDENTS GAIN SIGN LANGUAGE AWARD IN ENRICHMENT TIME - 12/07/2010

In Spring and Summer 2010 a group of Performing Arts students on the first year of their BTEC National Diploma went out of their way to gain a Unit towards Level One in British Sign Language during their Enrichment time in College.

This was coordinated by Mike Cassidy, Enrichment Officer, Karen Macavoy, Learning Support Tutor with responsibility for Sensory Impairment, and Carmel Clowes, Performing Arts Tutor, who liaised with Eddie McCabe from Talking Hands Academy Ltd. Eddie delivered the training to the students for an hour per week over ten weeks, and the students were so enthusiastic about their learning that they all passed the final assessment with full marks.

The students were awarded a College Certificate as well in recognition of their selfless motivation and achievement. Chris Jones, Equality & Diversity Manager who attended the College Award event, commented: “It is fantastic to see our students showing such a high degree of motivation to learn a skill purely to benefit others. They are a great example of young people showing a really positive community spirit and we are delighted to be able to congratulate them on behalf of the whole College.”
