Support
We have a team of advisers within the Learning Support that have a wide range of experience in providing support for learners with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Advisers have extensive knowledge of different needs and how best to support them.

The team covers:

  • Deaf Support
  • Learning Difficulty
  • Mental Health
  • Personal Care
  • Physical Disability
  • Specific Learning Difficulty – Dyslexia
  • Visual Impairment

When you apply to college please let us know about your specific needs. An individual assessment will be made so we can plan and prepare for the support you will need when you start your college course.

You can tell us about your needs confidentially by:

  • Talking to an Adviser within Student Services
  • Telling us about any support needs on your application form
  • Discussing your needs with tutors at interview
  • Coming in to college for an assessment with one of our Advisers

Examples of support

In-class Support with a Learning Support Assistant (LSA)
This support can be offered on a one to one basis or as part of a small group. The Learning Support Assistant (LSA) can help with note-taking, prompting, recapping the tutors’ instructions and facilitate practical activities.

Additional Support Sessions
Additional Support sessions are provided by Learning Advisers on a one to one basis or as part of a small group. These sessions can help with reading, spelling, writing, homework, assignments, essays and improving confidence. Advisers can also use additional support sessions to provide strategies that help students with specific difficulties to become more independent.

Care Support
A qualified and experienced care team will support students before and after classes, during breaks and at lunch times. Care staff can support students’ personal care needs and provide mobility assistance.

Study Centre Support
Staff in Study Centre can also provide advice on constructing essays, referencing, research and proofreading. The Study Centre’s are open throughout the whole day so learners can call in whenever they are free.

Help with exams
With supporting evidence; we can apply for exam arrangements, extra time, a reader, large print or the use of a scribe along with many other types of concessions.
